Ideas Day October 21st 2008: 10th anniversary of the Manchester patent clinic

Our celebration of 10 years of helping inventors and entrepreneurs in the region to make the most of their innovations went extremely well. We traced some of the original inventors who were present at the launch of the clinic and three of them came along to show off their recent inventions and successful companies.

Just one example was Chandra Parmar who now has a thriving business www.kitchenguru.co.uk online and also supplying Waitrose, Harvey Nichols and Sainsburys with his patented prepacked spices and menu for easy to cook Indian meals.

Other successful businesses assisted more recently by the advisers at the clinic came along to swell the ranks of “Meet the Inventor” . Zulf Choudhary from Spartapay with his award winning IT business, Jayne Lawton with Grobox Gardens and Liam Martin with his sonic cat collar.

Sally Long from the UKIPO presented a “Profit from Ideas” workshop in the morning. Several local businesses and inventors attended. This also provided a training opportunity for nearby PATLIBs and some of the Greater Manchester business librarians participating in our Ask About Business service.

Our lunch-time speakers were Mark Sheahan, the British Library’s Inventor in residence, speaking on the A-Z of Inventing, and the North West Development Agency on Sources of Funding for R & D.

The event was very well attended and was covered by Channel M see the link:-

Our patent clinic for the day was fully booked – a good sign for future successes!

Indian Patents

Hi everyone

The Indian Patent Office now appears to be making a serious effort with regard to online patent searching. India now has four online patent databases covering different periods at http://ipindia.nic.in/patsea.htm. They cover the patent number ranges 1 - 80000 (1912 - 1961), 80001 - 153697 (1962 - 1981), 153698 - 169500 (1982 - 1988), and 169501 to date. The first two blocks can currently be searched by application number, publication number, title, and applicant and the third by publication number only. The current section can be searched by a wider range of fields, including title, abstract, applicant, inventor, IPC classification and numbers. For the first three blocks the complete patent specification is usually available as pdf, while the current section at present only has bibliographic details and abstract with specs promised later.

Espacenet improvements

Hi everyone,

Croatia now has a national Esp@cenet® server at http://hr.espacenet.com. The national database file contains all HR A and B documents since 1994. It is also the third Esp@cenet® national server to use the new EPTOS system for the national file, after France (http://fr.espacenet.com) and Poland (http://pl.espacenet.com). This provides an opportunity to discuss the advantages of this system over older Esp@cenet® systems. The old limit of five Boolean search terms has been removed, and it is claimed that it will be possible to search within the digitised document full-texts in "Description" and "Claims" where these are available (at present none of the national files on these servers appears to have digitised full text). It is also finally possible to perform a proper date range search, using a hyphen to link the first and last dates. One can search a range of years, for example by entering 2005-2007, months, for instance 200501-200504, or days, for example 20050115-20050131. Note that as yet this only affects the national files on these servers, which must be searched in the local language.

World IP Day

Better late than never, here are details of the display put together by Duncan and myself for World IP Day on Saturday 26th April. We decided that the display should contain items that not only exemplify IPR, but are also linked in some way to Birmingham. We felt that this might encourage users to take a look and also enforce the idea that IPR are in everything we use.

Subsequently we used the Hudson whistle (police and football) and the rollerskate as examples of patents originating in Birmingham. We were fortunate enough to receive 3 19th Century whistles for the duration of the exhibition from Hudsons; we also provided copies of the original patent document for both of these inventions. To exemplify copyright, we exhibited an original vinyl copy of Duran Duran's first album alongside a copy of Jonathan Coe's 'The Rotters Club' and 'Nice Work' by David Lodge. Trade marks were covered by Birds Custard and Brylcreem; whilst we used the Austin Mini as evidence of unregistered design right.

All of the artifacts were supported by information on their history and also IPR. The display was in a prominent public area for one week.

WIPO PCT-SAFE Software

Hello all,

Our first blog from Birmingham (thanks Chris!). A user has recently requested whether we can install electronic filing software for WO patents from the WIPO website http://www.wipo.int/pct-safe/en/index.html . Although I see no real problem with this, I am wondering whether any fellow Patlib's have used the sofware and what their experience has been.

Many thanks,

Matthew
