Espacenet has changed and Philip Eagle from our BIPC team has summarised the main changes for us all below. Enjoy!

Hi everyone
Esp@cenet® has launched its new version 5 interface at http://worldwide.espacenet.com. The old international ep.espacenet.com address will be abandoned in April or May 2011. Other national gateways will have the option of migrating to the new interface.
On the surface the layout of the page has altered, but the "Smart" search is still presented initially with the option to select the "Quick", "Advanced", "Number" and "Classification" searches which offer the same basic search options with a visual facelift.
The initial result list page contains the same information but is similarly facelifted in appearance. However, new features are available to download the list in CSV or XLS format, and to download the front pages of selected documents as a single PDF file. A "Query History" function is also available, although this must be pre-activated presumably for privacy or server load reasons.
Moving on to the display of individual patents, the main change is that the options of Bibliographic Data, Descriptions and so on are now to the left of the main display instead of at the top. The bibliographic data page now has a direct link available to copy and paste into emails or bookmarks. In the original document display, the link to download the patent as a complete pdf is now much more visible and reads simply "Download". The new look now also has "breadcrumb" trail style navigation to move between the search page, results list, and single-document display, and the search page, results list, "My Patents" list and query history are always visible as a link bar immediately below the header.
Regards
Phil

Manchester Inventors Group Christmas meeting "Ipeology?"
Manchester PATLIB hosted a well attended, despite the cold, ice and snow, Christmas Inventors Group meeting on Tuesday December 7th. Ipeology?, a Manchester based design and innovation company, presented a series of project case studies highlighting a number of products, which have been developed in conjunction with inventors as part of their ‘shared equity’ scheme. The company assists individuals in bringing products to market by offering design and manufacturing services in return for an equity stake in the idea. Also planned was a live demonstration by Tri-Tech Engineering of a 3D printer to produce a brand new sport product by Dragons’ Den inventor and Manchester Inventors Group member Dr Kin Kam. Unfortunately, due to the extreme cold, the printer (coming from a cold van) didn’t warm up in time for the live demo – but Blue Peter “prepared earlier” items were available on show. Tri-Tech also offered a free rapid prototype draw at the end of the evening – won by one of our lucky members…and mince pies were enjoyed by all!

Looking after Number One: Panel Discussion
Looking after Number One: Panel Discussion from Manchester Libraries on Vimeo.
A question and answer session about music copyright with expert advice from John Robb, writer and Goldblade frontman. Joining John is Nigel Gardner, music specialist and director at Cobbetts plus Ged Doonan, patent librarian at Leeds City Libraries and Matt Wheelton from the band Zap Zap Zap.
This was a free event hosted by Manchester Libraries at City Library, Manchester on August 25 2010.
This is quite a long video because the panel offered so much useful information and advice for young bands and songwriters we didn't want to leave any out!
