Plymouth PATLIB : "Meet the Inventors"

To celebrate World Intellectual Property Day, Plymouth PATLIB are organising an event called Meet the Inventors on Thursday 30 April from 2-3.30.

It's a drop in session for the public so that they can discuss inventions and patents with people who have been through the process.

At the same time, Plymouth PATLIB are organising a Cracking Ideas event for a local school. The class will be coming in to meet the inventors and then get to play the games on the Cracking Ideas website as well as learn something of the world of inventions and innovation.

Great news from PATLIB Bristol - IP Clinics 2009

The following announcement is due to appear on the ideas21 website and in the ideas21 and IPO newsletters with full details of the events to appear on the Bristol Central Library website : -

ideas21 is delighted to announce that we are expanding our free Intellectual Property Clinics in the New Year with advice sessions now to be held monthly at the Bristol Central Library. It is important that individuals and small businesses developing innovative products can protect themselves from copyists and imitators. Intellectual Property rights, such as patents, trade marks and registered designs, can provide this protection.

ideas21 member, Lewis Hands, principal attorney at Handsome IP, has kindly offered his services in running these sessions for us. Lewis is a registered European Patent Attorney, a Chartered UK Patent Attorney and a European Trade Mark and Design Attorney. He is a member of the Institute of Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office and a member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys.

These clinics are supported by the PATLIB Bristol at Bristol Central Library and as part of the Our City Ambitious together theme supporting the growth of an enterprise culture and the UK IPO.

The first session is to be held on Tuesday, 20th January 2009.

PATLIB UK AGM

This is just a very brief round up of the events at this years AGM as you were all there!

The PATLIB UK AGM 2008 was held on November 26th and 27th in Portsmouth. Our hosts for the two days were Jane Vince and Portsmouth Central Library. Our guests for the two days were Helen Hodgson, of the Intellectual Property Office, and Nia Roberts from the Welsh Assembly Government.

The first day was the round up of the past years news from across the PATLIB UK network and a discussion on the 'secret shopper' exercise that was run during the year. We also agreed the wording for an addendum to the PATLIB UK constitution. The day finished with the members going out for a meal at Strada a nice Italian restaurant in Portsmouth.

The second day was our training day where both Helen and Nia gave talks.

• Helen spoke about the new IP Health Check - a web based diagnostic tool for SME's and also about licensing in general.

• The title of Nia's talk was 'The Welsh Connection' and we learnt of the efforts being made by Nia and her colleagues to set up two new PATLIBs in North and South Wales.

We finished the day with a forum discussing the training requirements of the PATLIBs.

Ideas Day October 21st 2008: 10th anniversary of the Manchester patent clinic

Our celebration of 10 years of helping inventors and entrepreneurs in the region to make the most of their innovations went extremely well. We traced some of the original inventors who were present at the launch of the clinic and three of them came along to show off their recent inventions and successful companies.

Just one example was Chandra Parmar who now has a thriving business www.kitchenguru.co.uk online and also supplying Waitrose, Harvey Nichols and Sainsburys with his patented prepacked spices and menu for easy to cook Indian meals.

Other successful businesses assisted more recently by the advisers at the clinic came along to swell the ranks of “Meet the Inventor” . Zulf Choudhary from Spartapay with his award winning IT business, Jayne Lawton with Grobox Gardens and Liam Martin with his sonic cat collar.

Sally Long from the UKIPO presented a “Profit from Ideas” workshop in the morning. Several local businesses and inventors attended. This also provided a training opportunity for nearby PATLIBs and some of the Greater Manchester business librarians participating in our Ask About Business service.

Our lunch-time speakers were Mark Sheahan, the British Library’s Inventor in residence, speaking on the A-Z of Inventing, and the North West Development Agency on Sources of Funding for R & D.
